Puberty And Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone know if there is any kind of link between puberty hormones and epilepsy? My mom and I just find it kinda odd when my neurologist doesn't know what could have caused it, how I just start having seizures right around that same age it started for me.

There is a type of epilepsy called catamenial epilepsy. With it, seizures are triggered by hormonal changes in women typically at ovulation or onset of menses.

When my seizures are controlled, the break-through seizures always occur the day before menses as my hormones change drastically.

My daughter has salom seizures but was diagnosed with tuberous schlerosis. Any information from anyone else?

Hi Abigail, Yes there is! My epilepsy started at the age of 16 due to stress and puberty, i.e. hormonal changes in the body... I had a hysterectomy in my 30s and am now in my 50s going through Menopause. I am on HRT and depending on the level of oestrogen, a seizure can occur. Should you need to chat, feel free to contact me.

I did grow out of them and then BAM, they started again when premenopause started. Ugh.

Seizures are caused by stimulus overload, and puberty is overloading your body while simultaneously exhausting it, it could be that you are having seizures right now because your body is going through changes. As I said before, my seizures were at their worst though puberty and decresed in frequency as I got older. I kind of grew out of them. So things could get better.
