How Does Heat Effect Epileptics?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just wondered how heat can effect people with epilepsy such as myself and others? I know that when I am in the heat for a certain amount of time I tend to feel not myself and sometimes I may have a blackout for a few seconds.

Heat is a problem for me. I can't be out on a hot day for too long or out doing gardening during the hot part of the day.

So glad this question came up! I thought it was just me imagining that heat is a trigger for me! It has happened often and I have to be careful! My most recent trigger seizure happened a few days ago on the steps of the Capitol Bldg in Washington D.C. It was 100 degrees outside and it hit me.

I'm glad this question has come up. I have come to realize that the temperature difference may be a trigger for me myself. I live 2 blocks from the market and would walk there daily before the heat got so bad. Now I am pretty much on lock down until it cools down in the evening. The reason I brought up the market is this... a few months back we (my mother in law and I) walked to the market. It was hot, high afternoon. As soon as we went inside the market and the air conditioning hit me I felt the aura. The next thing I knew I woke up in the freezer dept. Thank goodness everyone knows me there for the most part anyway. The biggest savior was/is that one of the employees is one of us as well as my neighbor. He knows all to well the do's and don't s.

Heat has a big factor in what I do . it makes me have seizures but also drains me of energy which puts me at risk for seizures
