How Long Should An Aura Last?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I only get an aura for one of my seizures, but sometimes all i get is an aura and other times I get the seizure. My second seizure i have no warning whats so ever. But I would like to know, the times that the seizure doesn't come to be why does my aura last so long. Sometimes about as long as the seizure would have 10-15 minutes.

http://www.edmontonepilepsy.org/epilepsy/typess... "Simple Partial Seizures
During a simple partial seizure, formerly known as a focal seizure, the individual remains aware. A simple partial seizure may involve sensory, motor, psychic, or autonomic symptoms. These symptoms result in the person experiencing an unusual sensation, feeling or movement called an aura. The aura may be a distortion in sight, sound, or smell where a person sees, hears, smells things that are not there. It may also be a sudden uncontrollable jerky movement of one area of the body, such as the arm, leg or face. A person may experience a sudden overwhelming emotion, such as joy, sadness, fear or anger. Others may experience stomach upset, dizziness, a shiver, a tingling or burning sensation, pallor or flushing. Occasionally there will be the experience of déjà vu during which a person has the sensation of having experienced something before.

The seizure usually begins suddenly and lasts seconds to minutes. An aura is a simple partial seizure that may occur alone or may progress to a complex partial seizure or a generalized seizure. If the aura indicates the onset of a complex partial seizure or generalized seizure, it can sometimes be used as a warning signal to allow a person to take the necessary precautions to avoid injury."

I get an aura before every sz. They're just slightly different prior to the type of seizure, which tells me the seizure type coming. They last about 30-60 sec. prior to sz beginning. Some days I feel as if I fight auras (like tazer up my back & people's voices distorted) for hours w/o seizing. The Epi says those are a type of minor seizure.

I get and aura before every seizure. Usually lasts about maybe 4 or 5 seconds. Mine feel like I'm afraid of something, like having a gun pointed at me.I was also in a monitoring unit and I to thought I was awake through my seizures but they told me I was unconscious most of the time. I couldn't remember a thing when they said remember three things. Even the colors they showed me when my seizure completed I couldn't id they would change from white to yellow to orange etc.

Sometimes I'll get an aura that can last 30 seconds or it can last a few hours or the whole day. I take Valium for this and most of the time it helps and it doesn't lead to a seizure. It at least helps with the nasty aura I get. That can be miserable.
